For the sake of completeness, here's the follow-up to the build error I 
was getting.  I was also able to solve it by reinstalling into a deeper 
directory hierarchy (GLOBUS_LOCATION=/globus-4.0.0/globus).

It turns out that it's bad behavior on the part of ant which is
causing this.  The file has a default value for the install location
which is being overridden on the commandline when it is invoked.  For
some reason it still checks the validity of the relative path, which
is causing the failure you see.

You can either edit out some of the ".." in the .xml files that are
causing the problem (the error will always tell you which line number
to edit), or put it one level deeper in the directory tree.
