Sets of Objects

The importance of sets of objects

Common English terms, such as "report", "program", "musical work", etc., often correspond to many objects in the digital library.

Sets of objects are used by originators to group related objects. Examples include:

  • Texts that differ only in format (PostScript or SGML).
  • Computer programs with and without bug fixes.
  • Different performances of the same musical work.
  • Sets of objects can be represented in the digital library in two ways, composite objects, in which the content contains a set of objects, and meta-objects, in which the content includes handles for a set of objects. Combinations are also possible.

The following diagram shows a composite object.

The following diagram shows a meta-object.
